North American Vexillological Association

Preservation of Civil War flags and other historic banners

The "NAVA" North American Vexillological Association is an organization dedicated to the preservation of flags as well as the study of how they were made and how they were designed. If you have an original flag, it needs special care and this organization is a priceless asset to our understanding how to preserve them.

If you live in a state that has a Civil War Battleflag collection, it is probable that they have images of these flags on hand or artistic recreations on canvas. Many of these flags, however, still reside in storage boxes or cases waiting for preservation efforts. It is a very very expensive process to restore an original flag.. Tens of thousands of dollars each in most cases. These flags need to be preserved or as they deteriorate past the point when that is possible, we loose them forever. There are some awesome webpages out there that allow us to see these flags and for those Vexillologists of us out there who make a living re-creating these flags, it is a great resource. See our list of links for some of these sites.
